Australian Skilled Migration

ausfisHome_755x228
Overview
Skill Select has been designed by Australia’s Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) to allow better access to skilled migrants whose occupations are in demand in Australia. The point system and pass mark that Skill Select is built around is designed to respond over time in reply to Australia’s continued fluctuating job market. It is not the only option for skilled workers but it may be the most desirable due to the independence and opportunity for permanent residence.
The requirements for an Australia Skilled Visa are as follows:
Age – you must be under 50 when you apply;
English language – you should have sufficient ability in the English language to work in Australia (at least at a competent level);
Nominated occupation – when you apply you nominate a skilled occupation, which fits your skills and qualifications. Your nominated occupation must be found on the Skilled Occupations List;
Skills assessment – before you apply, you must have your skills assessed by the Australian assessing authority designated to assess your nominated occupation (which will usually have specific qualifications requirements);
Health assessment – you should be of reasonably good health and all applicants must have their health assessed by a panel doctor and undergo a medical examination; and
Character assessment – you should be of good character and this too will be assessed.
Categories
There are now 3 classes of skilled visas within Skill Selects General Skilled Migration (GSM) system and all applicants must nominate an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL) or Combined Skilled Occupation List (CSOL) of Australia, and meet the basic requirements at the time of application.

Skill Select Independent Visa – subclass 189
To qualify for this visa, an applicant must meet the basic requirements and score a minimum of 60 points on the points test. These applicants will be working in occupations that appear on the Skilled Occupations List (1).
This visa allows the successful applicant, independent of any sponsor, to gain immediate permanent residency in Australia, and places no restriction on the region of residence or the nature of the work the applicant can undertake. Applicants are required to lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) which will be reviewed by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) and if deemed acceptable an Invitation to Apply (ITA) will be issued to the applicant to make an application to migrate to Australia. Applicants with higher scores will be selected for invitation first and occupations are subject to capping.
Skill Select Nominated Visa – subclass 190
To qualify for this visa, an applicant must meet the basic requirements, score at least 60 points in the points test, and must be nominated by a participating State or Territory of Australia. These applicants will be working in occupations that appear on either the Skilled Occupations List (1), or the Combined Skilled Occupations List (2).
The successful applicant and all included dependents will be granted immediate permanent residency in Australia, and will be required to reside in the sponsoring State or Territory for a period of 2 years.
Skill Select Nominated or Sponsored – subclass 489 (State/Territory or Family in a designated area) Provisional visa
To qualify for this visa, an applicant must meet the basic requirements, score at least 60 points in the points test, and must be sponsored by a family member who is an Australian Citizen or permanent resident living in a designated area of Australia, or nominated by an Australian State or Territory. Most commonly these applicants will be working in occupations that appear on the Combined Skilled Occupations List (2).
The successful applicant and all included dependents will be granted provisional residence for 4 years upon first entry to Australia and will be required to demonstrate that they have met the residence and work requirements as stipulated by the visa conditions in order to apply for Australian Permanent Residence. This visa type is intended for those people who want to live and work in Australia but who do not meet the requirements of the subclass 189 or 190.
