General visa criteria:
Intention is to holiday, rather than work, in the UK
Citizens of some countries will need to apply before arrival
Others may be issued the visa on arrival
Requirements 
The majority of UK visitor visas are granted at the port of entry. However, if you are a citizen or national of one of the visa national countries, you will require a visitor visa before you arrive in the UK.
In order to qualify for a UK visitor visa you must be able to show that:
  • You intend to leave the UK at the end of you visit
  • You do not intend to take up employment, either paid or unpaid
  • You do not intend to produce goods or provide services within the UK, including selling goods or services directly to the public
  • You do not intend to study at a state-maintained school
  • You are able to maintain and accommodate yourself and any dependants without recourse to public funds
  • You can meet the cost of your onward or return journey

Note that South Africa will be included as visa nationals from 03 March 2009.
